2021 m. 29 April-6 May Kaunas Teacher Qualification Centre and the Kaunas City Methodological Group of Early English Teachers organised a virtual dictation writing competition “Listen to write” for primary 3 pupils in English. The aim of the competition is to stimulate students’ interest in English, improve their knowledge of English, and develop their listening and writing skills.
Teachers who registered were sent dictation entries at 3 levels: difficult, basic and easy. Students at all levels had the opportunity to choose their level and write a dictation. The recorded dictation texts were read out in a relaxed, clear, loud voice.
Dictation writing is an event aimed at developing correct writing and listening skills in English. This is one of the methods of teaching foreign languages, where the learner needs to hear not only the words spoken, but also to understand the sentence, and then write it down without mistakes. The whole class participates in the dictation. Research shows that learning to write down what we hear helps develop literacy.
Students from 51 schools took part in the competition, and 1562 students wrote the dictation. 143 pupils wrote the dictation without mistakes at the difficult level, 171 at the basic level and 117 at the easy level.
The English teachers are grateful to the organisers for the excellent preparation of the competition materials. It is great to see that even in such a difficult school year, there are events that are interesting for teachers and children alike.
